On June 13, Austin Center for Advanced Studies (CAS) and its Partnering Executives held this year's "CAS Summer Welcome & Award Reception" on the IBM Austin Campus. This event brought CAS Research Faculty and their IBM Summer Students, sponsoring Executives, Managers, and Project Mentors together to announce the new ACAS 2003/2004 Faculty Award winners and honor the recently announced CAS Student Fellowship recipients and SUR Grant winners.
Dr. Ann Marie Maynard, Austin CAS Program Director, and Mike Rosenfield, Director of Austin Research Laboratory which houses CAS, opened the reception with a warm welcome to attendees in Austin as well as in IBM Poughkeepsie via video conference. The Austin Center for Advanced Studies (Austin CAS) is an IBM-Research-based institution dedicated to promoting and cultivating university relationships and collaborative research between IBM organizations and universities across the United States and beyond. Rosenfield commented on the importance of our university relationships and the growing number of projects under Austin CAS. In 2003 over a dozen IBM Research and Development Labs will sponsor over 25 university projects under Austin CAS through Faculty Awards, SUR Grants, and Student Fellowships to over 10 universities throughout the US and Europe. As a testament to its success, the Award Ceremony announced over $1 million dollars that will support the upcoming academic year's research. At the ceremony, IBM Mentors and Sponsors officially presented over 20 of these awards to beaming professors and students, many who are repeat recipients.
Among the most notable were University of Texas at Austin's Steve Keckler and Doug Burger who have been
collaborating on research with Systems Group (Anthony Befi/Mark Papermaster) for several years through Austin CAS. In addition to Faculty Awards, these professors also received a prestigious SUR Grant which will give the Computer Science Department a cluster of machines for a large research effort involving several CS faculty and IBM Researchers and Developers. Dr. Patricia Teller and the University of Texas at El Paso were also big winners receiving a Faculty Award, a SUR Grant, and a Student Fellowship. In total, 9 Student Fellowships were awarded. Seven were Ph.D. Fellowships that will pay full tuition, fees, and a $17K stipend, and award an IBM Laptop to new recipients. Two GEM Fellowships (Master-level awards) were given to students from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez.
