
Hamid Pirahesh
IBM Fellow and manager, Database Technology Institute

Dr. Hamid Pirahesh is the senior manager of the DataBase Technology Institute (DBTI) at IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. He manages a team of scientists active in advanced database research. Dr. Pirahesh was a principle member of Starburst research project, which forms the basis for query compilation in IBM's DB2 Universal Database. He was also an active member on the team that reshaped the entire architectural structure of the DB2 relational query compiler and optimizer. Dr. Pirahesh has been active in creating new industry standards and database design advancements. His work on Automatic Summary Tables, which complies with current SQL standards, resulted in dramatic database performance improvement. This feature is now considered an essential part of commercial DBMSs for processing complex queries, Online Analytical Processing and complex data analysis. Dr. Pirahesh is an IBM Fellow, master inventor, and a member of the IBM Academy.
