IBM Fellowship Program for the 2000/2001 Academic Year

IBM Fellowship nomination deadline extended to December 17th

Due to the earlier starting date and the additional nomination material required for this year's program, the deadline for submissions for IBM Fellowship nominations has been extended to December 17th. We thank all those departments and faculty members who have already submitted their nominations.

IBM is pleased to announce the year 2000 fellowship program for students pursuing the Ph.D. degree in areas of broad interest to IBM, including chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, material science, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics and related disciplines. Students nominated for an IBM Fellowship should be enrolled full time in an accredited US or Canadian college or university and should have completed at least one year of graduate study before the 2000/2001 academic year begins. Nominations must be made by a faculty member and endorsed by the department head.

IBM Fellowships are intended to help enlarge the pool of talented Ph.D.’s. in areas of importance to IBM. IBM values diversity in the workplace and encourages nominations of women, minorities and others who contribute to that diversity.

IBM offers two types of fellowships: Research Fellowships and Cooperative Fellowships (described below). IBM will award approximately 25 fellowships in each of these categories. Both fellowships cover tuition and fees, and provide a student stipend of $15,000. In addition, each category of fellowship will provide for a small number of Distinguished Fellowships with a stipend of $20,000. All fellowships are awarded annually and are eligible for continuation based on the student’s academic standing, continued progress and achievement, and the level of interaction with IBM's technical community. All fellowship recipients must be renominated to be considered for an award renewal.

Nominations for the 2000/2001 academic year will be accepted from October 15, 1999 to December 1, 1999. Award recipients will be notified by April 7. Faculty wishing to nominate a student for either Fellowship can do so during the nomination period at the Fellowship nomination website.

IBM Ph.D. Fellowships

Research Fellowships are intended for students wishing to pursue a career in Research and will be administered by the IBM Research Division. Selection for the Research Fellowships will be based on research excellence and an assessment of the student's overall potential for a research career, as well as his/her progress to date. Finalists will be determined by February 18th and their faculty nominator will be requested to provide additional letters of recommendation by March 10. In 2000, up to four Distinguished Fellowships, with stipends of $20,000, will be awarded to students of exceptional promise.

Students receiving a Research Fellowship will be offered an internship at one of the Research Division's laboratories*, and have the opportunity to interact with Research scientists.

Cooperative Fellowships are intended for students who wish to pursue a challenging technical career in advanced technology and product development as well as related research areas. Cooperative Fellowship awards are based on the nominee’s technical excellence and a strong interest of a participating IBM development laboratory in the nominee’s desired research area. Where strong interests arise, the nominee’s faculty or thesis advisor will be notified by December 18th to provide more complete information by February 11th about the student’s research interests. In the case of exceptional promise, Distinguished Fellowships, carrying a stipend of $20,000, will also be awarded.

Students receiving a Cooperative Fellowship will be offered an internship at one of IBM's development laboratories*, as well as the opportunity to interact with IBM technical people in a variety of settings.
