Analyst report cites IBM Research "most influential"

Gartner: "IBM maintains its lead as the most influential IT research lab in the industry"

November 27, 2001 -- According to a report issued last week by Gartner Inc., a Stamford, Connecticut based IT research and consulting firm, IBM's Research division "maintains its lead as the most influential IT research laboratory in the industry."

The Research Note, entitled "Inside the Lab: IBM Research," gives a short history of IBM Research and some basic facts about the IBM Corporation. Further on in the document, an overview of research areas includes descriptions of such focuses as Dynamic eBusiness, Deep Computing, Mining Unstructured Data, Autonomic Computing, Advanced User Interfaces, Pervasive Computing and Basic Science.

The report’s summary is that: "The IBM Research organization represents a strong source of innovation for the IT industry, a model for vendors managing research organizations and an opportunity for enterprises wishing to partner on research activities."

The document also discusses IBM’s technology transfer paths, including working directly with end-user organizations.

The report’s "bottom line" is that: "Because of the breadth and depth of its research, focus on technology transfer and communication, and willingness to innovate in the marketplace, IBM maintains its lead as the most influential IT research laboratory in the industry. Its challenge will be to continue current levels of activity and innovation in the face of potential cutbacks by customers in an economic downturn. IBM Research (along with IBM Global Services) should be considered by enterprises needing an IT partnership that requires a significant direct IT research engagement."
