Arun Kumar is a Research Staff Member at the New Delhi facility of IBM Research. He joined IBM's India Research Laboratory (IRL) in September 1999 in the Distributed Systems Research group where he contributed to and technically led projects in web services, grid computing, eUtilities, access control and web server farms. He spent the summers of 2002 and 2003 at IBM T. J. Watson Research Lab, Yorktown Heights, New York, working with the Scalable Server Systems Group.

In 2005, he joined the newly formed Telecom Research and Innovation Centre at IRL where he led the later half of Synthy-- a project for enabling semi-automated, end to end composition of web services. Recently, he has been working towards developing technologies and solutions with an aim to bring the benefits of IT to the billions of underprivileged in developing countries. Specifically, he proposed the concept of a Voicesite along with the vision of a World Wide Telecom Web (WWTW). He proposed key technology enablers and solution approaches for enabling several pragmatic applications in this arena. In late 2006, he played a key role in defining and starting an exploratory research project -- Pyr.mea.IT, in which he has been extensively contributing towards realizing these concepts.

In a previous life, he worked briefly as a Software Engineer with Hughes Software Systems (now Aricent), Gurgaon, India in the domain of Advanced Intelligent Networks. Prior to that he was a member of Distributed Object Systems Group at Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) where he worked on access control based security models for roles in object oriented systems.
