Aya Soffer is a Research Staff Member at the IBM Research Lab in Haifa, Israel, where she currently manages the Information Retrieval Group.
She received her MS and PhD degrees in computer science from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1992 and 1995, respectively. Before joining IBM, she was a research scientist at NASA Goddard space flight center, where she was part of the digital library effort.
She is an expert in pictorial information retrieval, non-traditional data retrieval issues, and spatial data structures. Her research interests include information retrieval on the Web, pictorial information systems, and non-traditional database systems. She co-chaired the SIGIR 2000 XML and Information Retrieval Workshop and was a guest editor of a special issue of JASIS, which was published in 2001, on this topic.
