David Carmel is a Research Staff Member at the IBM Research Lab in Haifa, Israel. David earned his PhD in Computer Science from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology in 1997. David research interests include multi-agent systems and information retrieval. In the latter field, David has been working on various issues such as performance and scalability issues, topic distillation, IR over XML data, and evaluation methodology.

At IBM, David is a key contributor to IBM enterprise search offerings. David is a co-founder of the Juru search engine which provides integrated search capabilities to several IBM products.

David has published numerous papers in Iinformation retrieval and Web conferences, and serves in the Program Committee of several IR conferences (SIGIR, CIKM, ECIR) and workshops. The paper "Learning to predict query difficulty", coauthored with Elad Yom-Tov, Shai Fine, and Adam Darlow, won the Best Paper Award at SIGIR 2005.
