Hello. I work at the Telecom Research Innovation Center (TRiC) in IBM India Research Lab. My work needs me to understand a large spectrum of (telecom) industry solutions, starting from core networking technologies and infrastructures (e.g. PSTN architectures, cellular architectures, digital convergence models) to business and support system processes. At TRiC, I primarily focus on network and service convergence-oriented solutions and application enablers in telephony/IP Infrastructure.

My research broadly encompasses areas of converged networks, mobile and pervasive computing, sensor networks, and more recently social networks. At IRL, I have initiated research and collaborations in areas of SIP/Presence/VOIP, social networks and technologies for developing regions.

My work spans across innovative systems design, prototype development, implementation, and experiments. Here is a brief summary of my research activities.



I am currently working on SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) / VoIP / IM / Presence. I am currently working on Large Scale Federated and Virtualized Presence - where we view presence broadly as an infrastructure to harness real-time attributes about people, heterogeneous devices (not just online/offline status in IMs).
We introduce the concept of Presence Virtualization which we define it as the ability for a presence client to “push” the application-specific logic for deriving composite presence state, based on the presence-related attributes of individual presentities across different domains. Our project aims to develop a highly scalable virtualized and federated presence infrastructure for heterogeneous presence-based applications, across enterprises and provider domains.

Another project I am involved in is BusinessFinder. BusinessFinder is an advanced presence-driven, location-based matchmaking framework. It incorporates real-time information of search attributes during matchmaking and provides information and the ability to establish an on-demand connection to mobile subscribers quickly, whenever and wherever needed. This enables a variety of market applications and opportunities for emerging businesses and solutions trying to exploit real-time information about people and devices.

I have been involved in initiating research in TRiC in the area of technologies for developing regions. Our work is known as "World Wide Telecom Web" (or Spoken Web) elaborates our vision of a voice-driven ecosystem parallel to that of the WWW. It has gained significant interest in IBM since its inception. I currently work on the problem of developing a voice driven ecosystem (dubbed "Folksomaps") for community-generated intelligent maps.

My work in this area started in 2005 with a deep dive into massive telecom graphs and extraction of knowledge from telecom graphs. Currently, I work on online/mobile social networking, both in terms of new applications and enablers as well as mining and analyzing social network data. I am co-leading a project dubbed R-U-In (pronounced "Are you in?") that enables an activity-oriented social networking system for users to collaborate and participate in activities of mutual interest. R-U-In? understand semantics of activities and integrates with a variety of online social networks. I am currently working on various aspects of such an activity-driven social networking solution.
