About me

Manager, Technologies for Next Generation Pervasive Services
Research lab: Watson Research Center (Hawthorne)
My research interests include new usage modes and applications for pervasive devices, infrastructure support and middleware, device symbiosis and collaboration, efficient data access and dissemination, and novel user interfaces - mostly in the context of pervasive computing. I also lead a group of researchers in this area.
Some of my key accomplishments in the pervasive computing area include the Linux Watch, SoulPad, and the Personal Mobile Hub. In 1997, I built Geo+Cam, a navigation system prototype that augmented traditional maps with pictures of route landmarks (turns, exits, etc.) captured by a GPS-assisted digital camera.
I also worked on several graphics systems. I contributed to the development of the VMX SIMD extensions for the PowerPC™ that are now included in processors powering several high-end game consoles. I was the chief architect for one of the industry’s earliest implementations of single and multithreaded OpenGL graphics libraries shipped on IBM RS6000 workstations. I have also worked on high-performance graphics rendering engines.
I have authored several journal publications, conference papers and book chapters. I have served on the Program Committee for several leading ACM and IEEE conferences in mobile and pervasive computing (details here) and am a Senior Member of the IEEE. I was the General Chair for the 7th IEEE Symposium on Wearable Computing in 2003. I have received 25 IBM Invention Achievement awards, an IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement Award and several other IBM Awards. I hold approximately 45 US Patents in the areas of pervasive computing and computer graphics and have more than 45 pending US Patent applications. My work has also benefited several IBM products as noted in the projects section and has won some industry awards.
I received my B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and my M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Earlier I attended the Vidyaranya High School and the Hyderabad Public School in
