Dr. Yixin Diao is a Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J Watson Research Center. His research interests include performance and systems management, service automation and complexity benchmark, and adaptive control and optimization of distributed systems.

Yixin joined IBM Research in 2001. He has been conducting research on applying control theory and technologies to automated IT systems management, and received IBM Outstanding Innovation Award in 2005. His research results have been applied to the adaptive self-tuning memory allocation feature in DB2 version 9. Recently, he has been working on service delivery technologies with emphasis on complexity benchmark and measurement.

Yixin received the 2002-2005 IFAC Theory Paper Prize from the International Federation of Automatic Control for "Immunity-based hybrid learning methods for approximator structure and parameter adjustment" published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence. He is also the recipient of the 2002 Best Paper Award at IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium for "Using MIMO feedback control to enforce policies for interrelated metrics with application to the Apache web server."

Yixin received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University in 2000. He has published more than 40 papers and is the co-author of the book "Feedback Control of Computing Systems" (Wiley 2004).
