Joan Morris DiMicco joined the Collaborative User Experience Group in 2006. Her research interests include social networks, visualizations, and collaboration technologies. She is most interested in understanding how these technologies change human behavior.
Joan completed her PhD at the MIT Media Lab in 2005, where she built tools for face-to-face group interaction and then observed how groups altered their behavior based on the tools' feedback. Prior to MIT, in the mid-1990's, she worked at two start-ups, First Virtual Holdings (an early electronic payment system) and Open Sesame (any early recommender system). And prior to that, she earned a BS in Applied Mathematics from Brown University. Joan comes to IBM from Sun Microsystems, where she was working on social network visualization tools for Sun's research lab.
