Manager, secure systems and smart cards group
Research lab: Watson Research Center (Hawthorne)
Elaine Palmer is the manager of the Secure Systems and Smart Cards Group at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, New York. Her team developed the hardware and software for the IBM 4758, a secure, tamper-responding coprocessor for electronic commerce. The coprocessor performs high speed encryption operations, and it provides a secure environment for sensitive applications. This work is the base technology for several projects, one of which makes secure electronic checking possible.
Her group is also developing a highly secure operating system for smart cards.
Palmer graduated cum laude from Louisiana State University in 1977 with a B.S. in Computer Science. She graduated with distinction from Pace University in 1987 with an M.S. in Computer Science. She is a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, an honor society in the Computing Sciences. She joined IBM Research in 1984.
