Joseph G. Gordon II manages the Materials for Advanced Technology department at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. Previously, he was a technical staff manager, supporting the office of the lab director. Gordon has been employed by IBM since 1975 when he joined the staff of Almaden's predecessor, the San Jose Research laboratory. During this time he has led research projects and made significant contributions in materials and electrochemical research for which he has received both internal and external awards.
Gordon has published more than 75 technical papers, holds 12 patents and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In 1990, he was honored as Black Engineer of the Year for Outstanding Technical Accomplishment by the Council of Deans of the HBCU and in 1993, he received the Percy Julian Award of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE).
Dr. Gordon received a bachelor's degree in physics and chemistry from Harvard College in l966 and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970, where he was an NSF pre-doctoral Fellow.
