About me

Research staff member, sensor networks
Research lab: Zurich Research Lab
Walter Hirt joined the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Rüschlikon, Switzerland, in 1980, to work on signal processing concepts for IBM's digital magnetic disk storage devices. In the 1990's he concentrated on the development and standardization of wireless optical systems (IrDA AIr and VFIr). His more recent interests cover the emerging ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology, particularly its regulation, standardization and use in wireless sensor and location-aware applications. He initiated PULSERS, a large European Integrated Project for developing pervasive UWB radio systems, and he is inventor or co-inventor of patented concepts that earned him the status of Master Inventor at IBM Research twice in succession.
Walter received degrees in electrical engineering from HTL Brugg-Windisch, Switzerland, in 1971 (Ing. HTL) and from the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1977/79 (B.A.Sc./M.A.Sc.). In 1988 he earned the Ph.D. degree (Dr. sc. techn.) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, for work covering information-theoretic aspects of digital communication systems.
