Research lab: Watson Research Center (Hawthorne)

Anthony (Tony) Levas is a Researcher, and Manager of the Content Analysis Enablement and Application Dept. at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Hawthorne, New York. He joined IBM Research in 1983 and has worked in the areas of Robotics, Knowledge Based Modeling and Simulation, Business Process Modeling and Analysis, Pervasive Computing and most recently Information Management.

The focus of his department is enabling text analytics through easy to use tooling that supports the end-to-end development process. The group is currently building a toolkit called uDAT: unified Domain Adaptation Tool for this purpose as well as developing text analytics that are reusable in industry vertical solutions.

His previous research activity was in the area of Ubiquitous Computing focusing specifically on Interactive Spaces. There he worked on deviceless interaction through the use of Steerable Interfaces using Projection, Computer Vision and other technologies. He was a member of the Everywhere Display Project where his responsibilities included design of the System Architecture and the design and implemention of a JAVA based Application Development Environment called ED-JADE. The Everywhere Display Project activity, illustrating a novel "deviceless" appoach to human computer interaction, has recently led to three best paper awards and several internal IBM awards.

In the past he was the Project Leader for the BlueSpace project - a prototype of an "Office Of the Future". He was also the Project Leader for the Business Process Modeling and Analysis Tool (BPMAT) project, which through a joint collaboration with CACI, produced the SIMPROCESS product, commercialized and currently sold by CACI.

Tony is also an avid musician playing guitar for about 40 years. He took a one year leave of absence in 1996 to study and explore playing Blues and Jazz guitar. He had the good fortune to study and record with his mentor and dear friend Ronnie Earl as well as play with him on a European tour. He is a collector and player of vintage guitars and amplifiers and performs in the Westchester County area.
