The Mobile Network Computing Reference Specification (MNCRS)

The Mobile Network Computing Reference Specification, produced by a consortium of 18 companies, defines a set of standards for mobile Java devices. Version 1.1 was published in March 1999.

Mobile-computing researchers at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center played a central role in the definition of the MNCRS data-synchronization framework. We also built a reference implementation of the framework. I chaired the consortium's data-synchronization working group from September 1998 to March 1999.

An article by Gabriel Montenegro of Sun Microsystems, describing the MNCRS consortium and the specification itself, appeared in IEEE Internet Computing 2, No. 1 (January-February 1998), pages 73-77.
