Dr. Yaser Al-Onaizan is a research staff member in the Statistical Machine Translation group at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. Dr. Al-Onaizan earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1993, he joined King Abdulaziz for Science and Technology (KCAST) as a Research Assistant.
Dr. Al-Onaizan received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California (USC) in 1995 and 2002, respectively. During that period, he also worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Natural Language Processing Group at the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) of USC. His doctoral dissertation was in named-entity (names of places, organization, persons, etc.) translation.
Dr. Al-Onaizan joined IBM in 2002. Since joining IBM, he is been working on a variety of issues related to the modeling aspects of Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) as well as decoding (search) aspects. He is currently developing new models that utilize the structure of the source text to improve the translation quality. He is also working on new decoding technique that address some of the limitations of current decoding techniques.
Dr. Al-Onaizan has several publications in the top conferences in the field (e.g., the Human Language Technology Conference (HLT) and the Association of Computational Linguistics (ACL)). He is also a peer reviewer and served as a committee member in these conferences.
