A Senior Technical Staff and Senior Manager, Ron leads the Systems Solutions and Architecture Department at the IBM's T. J. Watson Research Center, multiple teams of research scientists and engineers pursuing advances in a deverse set of systems technologies including virtualization and systems management, next generation memory subsystems, multimedia and information theory. His research interests also include systems security, with over ten years in this field and having led the Secure Systems Department at Watson prior to his current position where he was responsible for the advancement of trusted computing and hardware-based virtualization technologies to achieve strong platform guarantees. Ron was also a leader of the team which achieved the world's first overall level 4 validation of a cryptographic module (secure coprocessor) under the Federal Information Processing Standards 140 (FIPS 140), the highest possible level. Ron currently represents IBM as Vice President of the Trusted Computing Group, a not-for-profit organization formed to develop, define, and promote open standards for hardware-enabled trusted computing and security technologies.
Ron has working relationships with groups in every IBM product division, with a specific focus on the Systems and Technology Group where he has had a number of successes related to secure hardware and subsystems as well as virtualization-based security. Ron has also served on assignment with IBM's Corporate Security Strategy team as the Research representative to this body, and continues to collaborate closely with and influence IBM's corporate-wide strategy in this space.
Prior to joining IBM Research in 1997, Ron worked first for Motorola and then for Tandem Computers in Austin, Texas. In his ten years at Motorola, Ron worked in a number of organizations in Motorola's Computer Group and Semiconductor Products Sector where his focus was on systems software and hardware. At Tandem Computers for three years, he concentrated on fault tolerant systems aspects, making significant contributions toward the ability to upgrade Tandem's Integirty line of UNIX-based systems with minimal or no downtime (Online Software Upgrade). Ron has a degree in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin.
