Personal

I was born and grew up in Athens, Greece. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Athens, I spent a year studying signal processing theory and automation in the Electronics Division of the same University. Somewhere in between, I found myself in London working on Ar-CH4 drift-chamber telescopes with the Cosmic Rays Group at the Imperial College of Science and Technology.

Eventually, I came to the United States to study Computer Science, and graduated with a Ph.D. from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. My Doctoral thesis work was on the so-called "model-based" approach to object recognition; in particular, I extended the theory of the Geometric Hashing method, augmented it with a noise model, and embedded the whole approach in a Bayesian framework, effectively demonstrating equivalence to a Bayesian classification system.

Fun Stuff

  • I am a fan of the two wheels. So most of the time you will find me on my VFR 800-Interceptor playing hide-and-seek with speed-trap operators. And when not on the motorcycle, I ride my bicycle around New York City; my favorite route includes a big circle that begins in Queens, continues to Randall's Island through the Triboro bridge, across the East River over the 100th Street bridge, across East Harlem into Central Park, around the north side of the Park and up the so-called "Suicide Hill", back to 59th Street, across the river again on the Queensboro bridge and back to Queens. A fun and very scenic ride especially around sunset time.

  • I also spend a lot of time doing photography, digital as well as analog(=film: color and black/white, positive/negative anywhere from ASA 100 to ASA 1600)

  • And if there is any time left, I go fishing.

  • In the summer of 2000, I crossed the United States from San Diego to Chicago to New York City on a Bandit-GSF 600S. Awesome trip, lots of pictures; unfortunately, I have not as yet found the time to scan them and put them on the web.
