Steve R. White is currently working on autonomic computing at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where he explores ways of building computing systems that have billions of components, yet are still self-managing.

Steve has published in the fields of condensed matter physics, optimization by simulated annealing, software protection, computer security, computer viruses, information economies and autonomic computing, and holds over two dozen patents in related fields. He was elected to the IBM Academy, which advises the company on technology policy and direction, and has received IBM's highest technical award for his work. Steve received a Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego in theoretical physics in 1982. He held a post-doctoral fellowship at IBM Research before becoming a research staff member.
