David Toll received a B. SC. in Mathematics from University College, London in 1970, and an M. Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Southhampton in 1972.
He worked for the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory of the U.K. Science and Engineering Research Council from 1971 until 1984, working primarily on developing, networking and supporting a distributed network of 32 mini-computers located in British Universities.
He joined IBM in 1984, and has worked on several embedded operating system projects, namely CP/88 (for the XT/370), CP/286 (which was used for Rolm PhoneMail), CP/Q (which was used in a number of IBM products, including the 4758 Secure Co-Processor), and most recently on the Caernarvon Secure Embedded OS for smart cards.
