Dr. Yuqing Gao is a manager and Research Staff Member at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Southeastern University, Nanjing, China in 1989. She was a research professor of National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989-1991, where she was the project leader and the chief scientist for several projects funded by NSF of China. In China, Dr Gao received several privilege awards from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State of Education Commission of China, and the State Council of China. From 1992 to 1993, she was a researcher at CRIN, a CNRS Laboratory (Center de Recherché en Informatique de Nancy - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), Nancy, France. From 1993 to 1995, she was a research staff member and project manager for speech recognition research at Apple-ISS Research Center, Apple Computer Inc., Singapore, where she led the development of world’s first large vocabulary Chinese dictation system. At IBM she is managing the Speech Recognition, Understanding and Translation Research Team. She has been the project leader for the large vocabulary continuous speech dictation system, speech recognition and understanding for spoken language dialog systems, and speech-to-speech translation research. The speech recognizer she built for the IBM DARPA Communicator project was ranked number one in the 2001 DARPA Communicator Evaluation. She has been the principal investigator of DARPA CAST and TransTac projects at IBM and developed the IBM MASTOR system, which is being recognized as the most advanced and mature two-way speech-to-speech translation system, far superior to any available from other corporate or academic entities. Dr. Gao has published over 80 papers at various conferences and journals and has contributed to 5 books. She holds 18 US patents.
