Dr. Se June Hong received his B.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering from Seoul National University in 1965, and MS/Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois in 67/69. He then joined IBM Poughkeepsie Laboratory working in the areas of fault tolerant computing and design automation. Dr. Hong joined IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center at Yorktown Heights, New York in 1978. He was a senior manager in Mathematical Sciences Department (82-91), responsible for projects in natural language, computer algebra, computer based education and knowledge based systems. He was on an assignment as a senior staff of the office of the VP of technical plans and controls at Yorktown Heights (June 91-Oct. 92), and returned as a senior manager of computer science principles group in the mathematical sciences Department, (92-94). He is currently a research staff member emeritus, working on data mining technology.

During the academic year 74-75, he was a visiting associate professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana. He was a visiting professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), for the month of October 1980. He was a visiting professor at POSTECH for the Summer session 1999, and is currently an adjunct professor (2000-) of the ECE department, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana. He is a fellow of IEEE and a member of ACM, AAAI, KSEA, and Sigma Xi. He became a foreign member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea in 1997.

He served as a distinguished visitor in Computer Society, (72-74); the guest editor of Reliable and Fault Tolerant Special Issue of IEEE Transactions on Computers (July, 1982); a member of Ad-hoc Visiting Team for IEEE Engineering Accreditation Board, (79-84); a member of the Edison Medal Awards committee,(84-86); and the guest editor for Expert Systems for Engineering Applications, a special issue of Computer Magazine (July, 1986). He guest edited a special issue on Data Mining for the Future generation Computer Systems Journal (Nov., 1997) and co-guest edited with Dr. David Waltz another special issue on Data Mining for IEEE Intelligent Systems (Dec., 1999). He served as the chairman of the program committee of IEEE conference on AI Applications (CAIA-90) and as its general chair in 1991. He has been the US delegate to the IFIP TC/12 on artificial Intelligence, 1990-94, and served as its vice chairman, 1992-94. He chaired the IEEE Emanuel Piore Award committee, 1991-92.
