Team Members

Our department currently has seven principal investigators, who are conducting research in several key aspects in intelligent multimedia interaction. In addition to the principal investigators, we have had professional programmers working with us to build running prototypes and conduct system experiments. Every summer, we also recruit summer interns from the top research universities to engergize our team and have fun!

David Gotz Picture

David Gotz focuses on the use of intelligent and interactive visualization tools to aid in analytical tasks. His general research interests include visualization, multimedia systems and networking, and computer graphics. David received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Keith Houck Picture

Keith Houck oversees the development of the overall software and hardware architecture of RIA, which aims to support multiple heterogeneous client devices in dynamic settings. Keith is also responsible for the entire process of multimodal input acquisition, including speech and gesture recognition and understanding. In addition, Keith is interestested in pervasive user interfaces.

Peter Kissa Picture

Peter Kissa focuses on developing a web based visualization tooling and infrastructure. His research interests comprise but are not limited to the rich user interfaces, computer graphics and visualization. Peter received his Bachelor degree in Computer Science from Zilina University and has over 10 years of software engineering experience.

Jie Lu Picture

Jie Lu focuses on building intelligent information retrieval and analytic technologies and systems. Currently she is working on developing intelligent content assistance systems during business processes, which dynamically recommend suitable information content in context to satisfy users’ dynamic and heterogeneous information needs. Her general research interests lie in the use and development of information retrieval and machine learning techniques for effective and efficient adaptive information processing, particularly personalized and context-sensitive approaches for domain-dependent tasks. Her other interests include information management, search, and processing in distributed environments such as enterprise networks, peer-to-peer file-sharing networks, and social networks. Jie received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Shimei Pan Picture

Shimei Pan focuses on various intelligent multimedia/multimodal user interface technologies for context-sensitive information access and analysis. Currently, she is working on integrating visual and natural language query interfaces for effective information exploration. Previously, she designed a two-way adaptation-based framework for robust multimodal input interpretation. Her other research interests include instance-based natural language generation, spoken dialogue systems, intelligent query recommendations, and prosody modeling for concept-to-speech generation. Shimei received her Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University.

Zhen Wen Picture

Zhen Wen works on automatic graphics generation. His general research interests include machine learning, intelligent user interface, computer graphics and multimedia systems with a current focus on context-sensitive information retrieval, information visualization. Zhen received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Michelle Picture

Michelle Zhou concentrates on automated generation of animated 3D graphics and coherent multimedia presentations. Specifically, she is developing a hybrid generation paradigm that takes advantage of both knowledge-based and machine-learning approaches to design tailored presentations according to interaction contexts. Michelle received her Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University.
