Technologies for virtual and real worlds

IBM @ Second Life

The next evolution of the Internet is in the offing: we are currently experiencing how the Internet is acquiring a dimension that has so far been lacking – it is becoming three-dimensional. In 3D worlds such as Second Life, it is already possible to gather people from all over the world in a virtual room for a global meeting, or to present your products in artificial company buildings. And it will only be a matter of time before numerous business sectors from the real world shift to the virtual world. The task for an IT company therefore has to be to develop pioneering technology for these transformation processes. IBM has a number of technologies in its portfolio that enable the implementation of virtual worlds: Cell Broadband Engine, System z hardware, and the entire Middleware Stack.

IBM @ Second Life
With 4.2 million members, Second Life is currently the best-known example of the boom in virtual worlds. At this year's CeBIT, the IBM Development Center in Böblingen is devoting its attention to this and other issues. The Böblingen team is presenting examples of various projects that IBM has implemented on the Second Life platform, intended to illustrate the potential of virtual reality. On show will be, among other things, the virtual replication of the IBM Customer Center located in the Böblingen Development Center, as well as the E-Commerce solutions jointly developed with the American client Sears and Circuit City.

For the CeBIT, IBM is also showing the virtual implementation of two real CeBIT showcases in Second Life. From March 15 to 21, 2007, the topics 'A Better Planet' and 'Future Enterprise' can be used interactively in the virtual 3D room. Should you have any questions, a contact person is available in both worlds.
