The following publications highlight various aspects of our vision and results for virtual XML.

• K. H. Rose, S. Malaika, R. J. Schloss. Virtual XML: A toolbox and use cases for the XML world view. In Celebrating 10 Years of XML special issue of IBM Systems Journal, 45(2), 2006. Overview of how Virtual XML can be used. Complemented by an extended "Chartered Aircraft" example.
• Kristoffer H. Rose and Lionel Villard. Phantom XML. Conference paper at XML 2005. Technical paper explaining how Virtual XML avoids materialization of intermediate data representations.
• Kristoffer H. Rose, Lionel Villard, et al. Virtual XML Garden. Software release on IBM alphaWorks, November 2005. Prototype implemenation of part of the Virtual XML vision.

The following additional historic references are the only older ones we have been able to find about XML virtualization (try a Google search):

• A Microsoft "WWW8 Developer Day" (1999) presentation.
• An early (2002) discussion by a Sablotron developer.

None of these seem to develop the idea further, however.
