The very name connotes tangibility, and so for computers, "hardware" has always been associated with the part you can touch -- the "box" and the components it contains.
Our research includes work on all the major parts of computing, including designing and building the chips and storage devices, architecture and internal communication, various types of computer designs and devices, and the displays that constitute a user's primary interface with the computer.
Featured concepts:
Cooling off hot laptop models A cool design feature takes the heat off of IBM's ThinkPadŽ laptops. (August 2001)
Read the fine print The world's clearest computer display was designed to go straight from the lab to the assembly line. (November 2000)
Exploring frontier materials Modern-day alchemists at IBM Research are creating the stuff that will keep the computer revolution going, leading to 1-trillion-byte hard-disk drives and plastic computer screens that roll up and fit in your pocket. (July 1999)
As fine as the eye can see Ultrasharp images, produced by a variety of technologies, are coming to a monitor or a head-mount display near you. (December 1998)
A new twist on image projection High-resolution projection displays developed by IBM Research promise an array of diverse applications. (January 1996)
