The J-1 visa allows non-US nationals to come to the United States to study, do research, consult, teach and provide training in the fields of education, arts and sciences. To be admitted to the United States, it is necessary to have both the DS-2019 Form and a valid J-1 visa stamp in passport. The J-1 Visitor is then eligible to stay in the United States to work for the amount of time listed in box 3 of the DS-2019 Form, plus 30 days to depart.
Please note that obtaining a visa from a U.S. Consulate can take up to 10 weeks. Therefore, please do not delay in beginning this process. IBM Research is a J1 Program Sponsor, and is able to issue the DS-2019 (J-1 Visa) to a student who processes an advanced degree, or substantial years of experience in a scientific field, is proficient in English and be highly qualified technically, as shown by demonstrated accomplishments, publications or recommendations of professional peers in a field of research of interest to the Corporation. IBM will prepare the DS-2019 Form and send it to the student so that he/she can then obtain the J1 visa stamp at the U.S. Consulate for his/her entry to the United States.
