Making the grade
Technology-based learning encompasses a range of potential solutions, providing technical expertise to clients who face educational challenges in such areas as content management and delivery, learning standards, learning alignment and collaboration. It is applicable in both compulsory (K-12) and higher education, as well as in corporate and government settings.
Among these solutions are a portal with a set of tools to improve teachers’ productivity, a prototype that assembles just-in-time learning for users, and a methodology that measures the value or effectiveness of a learning program. Working with IBM Global Business Services, clients can use innovative methodologies and tools developed by IBM to deploy prototype learning technology that can help improve learning effectiveness, increase accountability and boost productivity.
Specialties
IBM has established the Institute for Advanced Learning (IAL), a research center to create prototype technology in technology-based learning. The IAL focuses on five main research themes, which comprise the specialties of this micropractice.
- Learning content management facilitates the creation and management of – and access to – e-learning content.
- Technology for K-12 education helps develop tools to enhance the performance of teachers and students.
- Collaboration for learning helps enable students, peers and mentors to collaborate for informal and formal learning.
- Learning effectiveness helps clients to more accurately measure the return on investment of their learning implementations.
- Accessibility helps make technology-based learning accessible to persons with disabilities.
In addition to these specific areas of technology-based learning, various IBM Research labs around the world specialize in leading-edge research in other relevant areas, such as text mining, expertise location, search, voice recognition, accessibility tools and mobile applications, which can be incorporated into technology-based learning solutions.
These specialties do not represent all the capabilities within this micropractice, but are among the many areas in which ODIS can assist with collaboration. Business leaders with ideas or custom solutions in mind, please contact ODIS or schedule a Think Tank Session with IBM researchers.
