Preparation and Properties of (SN)x

by G. B. Street, R. L. Greene
The chain compound (SN)x is the first example of a superconducting polymer. In this paper we review the chemistry, structure, and physical properties of (SN)x and describe how the electrical properties of this novel material depend upon the crystal growth technique. The thermal properties of S2 N2 and (SN)x are discussed with particular reference to the crystal growth process. The fibrous nature of the polymer is described and evidence is presented showing that interchain coupling plays a significant role in determining the physical properties of this material. Finally we summarize our attempts to prepare analogous polymeric metals.
